But before you pack your bags, there are a few important (and smart!) things you should know. In this blog, we’ll share everything you need to consider before making the move — from when to start applying to what salaries and housing situations really look like.
When should you start job hunting?
What many people don’t realise is that most employers we work with start looking for new employees only 1 to 3 months in advance. That means it doesn’t make sense to start applying now if you want to move in about 6 months.
Example: If you want to start in December and it’s currently April, the best time to start actively job hunting and applying is from the end of September.

Salaries abroad
Another important thing to keep in mind: salaries in Southern European countries like Spain, Portugal, and Greece are often lower than in the Netherlands or in Belgium. But don’t let that discourage you — because the cost of living is also much lower there.
Rent, groceries, eating out, and even activities often cost half of what you’d pay in the Netherlands.

Many companies we work with in Greece and Portugal offer relocation packages. This means you’ll get help with:
Sorting out the necessary documents (like a tax number or health insurance)
Arranging accommodation in your new location
Often a flight ticket to your new destination
Important to know: Don’t expect to get your own studio or apartment through the company. You’ll usually get a furnished room in a house shared with 3 to 5 housemates who often work for the same company. It’s a great way to instantly meet new people and settle in quickly!
Before you leave, make sure you have these documents sorted:
EU citizenship or a valid work permit for the country you’re moving to
A passport valid for at least 6 months Important: a passport is mandatory for Spain, but in Greece and Portugal, an ID card is accepted
A physical high school diploma (not just a digital scan)
A clean police record (like a certificate of good conduct or equivalent)
You must be 18 years or older
