Whether you're starting a new job, planning to study, or simply relocating to enjoy the Portuguese lifestyle, one thing is clear: you’ll need a NIF. This blog walks you through the entire process of getting your Portuguese tax number, with practical tips for both Lisbon and Porto.

What is the NIF?

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your unique tax ID in Portugal. You’ll need it for nearly every official or financial activity, including:

  • Opening a bank account

  • Renting an apartment or signing up for utilities

  • Getting paid

  • Applying for a visa or residency

  • Buying property

  • Enrolling in healthcare or university

In short: no NIF, no paperwork.
